It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to update a space. Any bathroom can look fresh and modern with these DIY tips. I’m sharing how we transformed our guest bathroom from basic to modern, and a few tips I picked up along the way.
Tip #1 Paint
Don’t be scared to tackle a new paint project. I’ll admit I was super hesitant to paint this bathroom cabinet. I was afraid I was going to ruin it by painting it and I didn’t want to sand or prime. Paint, it seems, has come a long way. It was fairly simple to remove the cabinet doors and paint this little vanity. The result – a bold contrast that set the tone for our modern, earthy room.
It’s your home and it should make you happy. Don’t be scared to try new things. If you don’t like it, you can change it! At the end of the day, the only person it should please is you. While you’re at it, update those cabinet knobs too 😉
Tip #2 Ditch the towel bars
Try shelves instead, especially if the only place to make towels available is above the toilet. Such was the case with our guest bathroom, where the only wall accessible is above the commode. Shelves also provide a place to add stylish objects, which you can swap out as often as you want.
You can add warmth by adding wood toned shelves, but I’m also a fan of white shelves or ledges in a bathroom. Keeping things light in a bathroom is a way to make the space look clean and inviting.
Tip #3: Update your lighting
This might be the most expensive upgrade, but were able to update our lighting fixture for around $65. And I was surprised to see many gorgeous options for under $100 these days.
Tip #4 Swap out your textiles
I love shower curtains because they add visual interest and texture to the space, but in our case the bathroom already had shower doors in place. In the future, I may add a shower curtain to give my guests some privacy. But new towels were a must and so was a new stylish hand towel. A new rug can help tie eveything together visually.
Tip #5 Add live plants
You’d be surprised how a touch of green instantly makes a room feel stylish and vibrant! If you have windows in the space, the possibilities are endless. Choose plants that love humidity or if light is scarce opt for one of those “plants of steel” like a snake plant, money plant or Z-plant. Keep in mind the humidity when picking something out, and make sure to add a lovely planter or basket for it.
