Our laundry room was a pretty basic builder grade space, but we spend so much time in here (four kids mean never ending laundry) that I decided to invest a little in making this room functional and stylish.

Before

I knew I wanted to brighten up the cabinets and opted for Benjamin Moore Advantage paint in “Smoke.” This line had great reviews on coverage. Call me lazy, but I did not sand or prime. I simply cleaned the shelves and started painting, using mainly a roller to avoid brush-strokes as much as possible.

The biggest endeavor was building the countertop. Here are the materials and tools we used:

  • Edged glued panel board (see photo below for reference)
  • 2 – 2 x 2 boards (as support beams)
  • 1 – 1 x 2 board
  • 1 heavy duty L-bracket
  • liquid nails glue
  • Wood stain
  • Finishing caulk
  • drill and screws
  • finishing nails and nail gun
  • stud finder
  • measuring tape and leveler

The most important thing is to measure the width and depth of your space. If your water line and outlets sit higher up like ours, you can opt to build a small shelf like did. In which case, the depth of your counter will leave room for accessing these.

For both the counter and the shelf, I bought two of the glued edged boards. I didn’t want a lot of knots in the wood so I inspected each board before having them cut to size.

You will need them to cut the piece or pieces for your countertop, the top shelf, the side/front of the shelf and the 1×2 piece that will rest above the front of your washer/dryer, giving it a built-in look.

The next step is adding the support pieces to each side. You will also need to attach one to the back wall to help support the removable shelf. As well as your L-bracket. It’s all about measuring and making sure the pieces are leveled.

Pre-drill the 2×2’s, then use long screws to attach them to the wall.

Attach the support pieces to studs.

Sand and stain all your countertop top pieces. Sanding is essential! Don’t skip this step or your stain will be blotchy. Next, nail your countertop board(s) to the support side beams, and attach the 1 x 2 piece to the front, above your washer and dryer. Caulk the edges of the countertop/wall sides.

If you’re building a shelf, use liquid nails to glue the riser to the shelf part. The riser part of the shelf should sit on the countertop, while the shelf is supported by the back 2×2 piece, as shown below.

The shelf is removable and therefore is not caulked or nailed down.
