I debated a long time writing this post because to me this doesn’t feel like much of a hack. Still, it is one of my most asked questions to date and it dawned on me that I needed to finally sit my butt down and write about it.

Okay, so here’s the story: three years ago when we moved into our house, my husband decided to purchase a very large TV for our living room. The problem was that our cabinet was almost the exact width of such TV and I knew right away I wanted a larger one to offset the width of the screen.

Our living room a few months after moving in.

I couldn’t find a cabinet that was wide enough and most importantly, within budget, to fit the large wall, and I knew I wanted something modern. Enter IKEA. Literally, I entered IKEA and purchased their BESTA cabinet, again. (The first one can be found behind the desk in my office.)

Like I said, I had previously purchased the BESTA for our home office, but I was surprised that there were now multiple door options, leg options, color options – AMAZING! I really had anticipated buying the door options and legs from a third-party, but IKEA had made it easy and offered a one-stop solution. The only problem, the BESTA only came as a 2 or 3 frame option and the width of the three-door one would have looked the same as our old (then current) setup.

The solution? Two 2-door cabinets, side by side. BOOM!

At under $400, the IKEA BESTA gave me a 94.5″ media console, with inside shelves and storage and the ability to replace doors and legs to update whenever I feel like.

To give it more of a custom look, we added these marble knobs which can be purchased here.

The half-moon marble knobs give this IKEA hack a high-end look.

If you are wondering if you can see where the two units meet from the top, the answer is yes. This doesn’t bother me and I feel like the overall look (and the cost) far outweigh the small imperfection of a seam. In the future, I plan to add a stone top cut the total width of the two pieces to hide the seam. In the meantime, I am more than okay with it.

Below is a list of everything you will need to order from IKEA to replicate our exact look, although like mentioned earlier there are many door and finish options available.

I hope you enjoyed the BIG SECRET of our media cabinet, hardly a hack at all, but a good and beautiful solution nonetheless! And if you look closely, you’ll notice a similar hack above the TV, but that’s a story for another day. 😉
