Simple Tips for an Airy Summer Home
Creating a breezy, open atmosphere is easier than you might think, and it doesn’t require a complete home overhaul.
A light, airy living space can elevate your mood, enhance your comfort, and even make your homes feel larger. By making a few thoughtful adjustments, you can transform your living space into a bright, welcoming sanctuary perfect for summer relaxation and entertaining.
Here are some simple yet effective ways to keep your home light and airy for the summer months.
Take the “less is more” approach
I don’t know about you, but when it’s hot outside I don’t want anything to make me feel overwhelmed. I want to look around me and see, well, less. Take a look around and ask yourself, “what are some areas that could do with less?” A clutter-free space will feel more open and inviting. Try adding baskets to a room or area to keep surfaces clear. (Opt for woven baskets to add an organic element to the room.) Other hidden storage solutions, like ottomans with compartments, help maintain a tidy appearance without sacrificing style.
Choose light colors
I love using light-colored accessories such as curtains, rugs, and throw pillows in light shades to add a fresh, summery vibe. These accents are easy to swap out and instantly lift the mood of any room without overwhelming the space. Beiges, creams and pastels can reflect light and make the rooms feel more spacious. It’s a simple change that makes a big difference.
At the same time, swap out heavy bedding for lightweight sheets and blankets made from breathable materials like cotton or linen.
Incorporate greenery
Adding indoor plants brings a refreshing touch of nature indoors. I recommend low-maintenance varieties like succulents, ferns, or peace lilies. They not only purify the air but also enhance the overall ambiance, making the space feel more lively and inviting. And I don’t shy away from adding faux ones either! The idea is for a space to feel refreshed.
I love displaying fresh flowers in vases around the house too. They add a splash of color and a natural element that brightens up any room.
Maximize natural night
There’s nothing quite like natural sunlight streaming into a room to lift your spirits. I start by ensuring my windows and mirrors are spotless, allowing sunlight to flood in and bounce off every surface. Swapping heavy curtains for light, sheer fabrics not only brightens the room but also maintains a sense of privacy while letting the sunshine through.
Another simple tip is to strategically place mirrors opposite windows to not only enhance natural light but to create the illusion of more space. Mirrors reflect both natural and artificial light, making rooms appear brighter and more expansive. I place mirrors in areas where they can catch and bounce light around the room, such as across from windows or near lamps. Choosing frames that are light in color or have a metallic finish can further amplify their reflective properties, adding to the overall brightness of the space. Think magic glow.
Incorporate textures and organic elements
To evoke a coastal-inspired atmosphere, I incorporate textures and organic elements throughout my home. Woven baskets, rattan vases, and jute rugs are simple ways to add a natural touch that complements the light and airy feel. These elements not only enhance the visual appeal but also bring a sense of relaxation and connection to nature.
These are just a few simple tips to keep in mind when refreshing your home for summer. Don’t feel like you have to rush through the seasons. Your home should always be your haven of relaxation. Embrace the season’s warmth and brightness!
